So you have decided that it is about time to start making money off the Internet.
Great idea!
Unfortunately, thousands of other would-be internet marketers have had the same idea and failed. But how come there are kids who are making six figure incomes, sometimes even seven figure incomes who are not even old enough to get their driver’s license?
What is it that separates the few who are actually making money online from those who only try?
Here are 3 deadly mistakes that newbie’s make that can sabotage your chance of success…
1. Too much focus on the product
This is by far the most common mistake that newbie’s make: focusing too much on the product. It is like the story of the single mom who is a button collector. Over the years she would get many compliments from her friends about her extensive collection of buttons, and more than once have they suggested that she should open a button shop.
Finally, thinking that it was a good idea, she invests all her money and the next 6 months to open a shop that stocks every button known to man.
On the highly anticipated opening day, she sends invitations to all her friends and family. They all buy some buttons from her store but in the end, this story has a sad ending because not enough people in the general public are interested in buttons… so she had to close down her store.
Don’t make the same mistake and listen to rumors or hunches. Study your market and make sure that it can support the product you are thinking of selling. Or better, find out what your market wants and then find / create the product to satisfy they want.
2. Too much focus on web design
Here is another common mistake. Fussing over making your site look fancy with animated graphics, stunning images and artsy modern designs. Although there is nothing wrong with a nice looking site, the problem is that often it takes away from what you want your site to do.
If you do research, you will see that some of the most profitable sites don’t look that fancy at all. Take Google for instance, they have millions at their disposal, and yet their homepage can be described as boring. Maybe they have a reason for it.
So what do you want to focus on your site? The answer is content. That’s right, it is the words that sell and persuade people to make buying decisions on your site, not the images. The graphics serve as more of an aid to enhance the words.
Yes, words / text / content / keywords have much higher priority over images or design. And I have not even mentioned about how search engines rank sites – you guessed it, it’s based on text, that’s because the robots can’t actually “look” at your pictures, but they can read text.
3. Trying to do something that is difficult to duplicate.
Yeah, so the creators of Hotmail and YouTube sold their creations for Billions and you want to duplicate what they did. Sure, you can do it too… if you had a team of programmers and hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars at your disposal.
That may be the extreme case, but a common mistake newbie’s make is to look at what some “popular” sites are doing and then trying to do it themselves. You may even spend thousands of dollars hiring a programmer to write a web program for you, but more often than not, you are only spending way too much money and time trying to do something that only has a miniscule chance of success.
Stick with what works and what has been proven to work. Don’t innovate too much, at least in the beginning. You might even want to find a mentor who can help you shortcut your success and start making money within the next 4 weeks.
So those are the 3 deadly mistakes of Internet web site marketing. Avoid them and you would have overcome what 99% of other wanna-bes will be stuck at for years.
